A Beginner's Guide to a Zero Waste Kitchen
18 October 2026 · 5 min read
Where to start if you want less waste in your kitchen — without throwing out everything you already own.
Use what you already have
The greenest item is the one you already own. Don't bin plastic containers or utensils that still work — use them until they're done, then replace them with something longer-lasting.
Start with the things you throw away most
Have a look in your kitchen bin for a week. Cling film, kitchen roll, sponges and takeaway cutlery are common culprits, and each has an easy reusable swap.
Plan meals to waste less food
Food waste is often the biggest part of kitchen waste. Write a rough meal plan, shop with a list, and keep leftovers at the front of the fridge so they get eaten first.
Choose things built to last
When you do buy, go for natural materials like bamboo, wood and stainless steel. They last for years and break down or recycle more easily at the end.
